The existing house was a one-and-a-half story home with two small bedrooms, and small living spaces. There was also a detached garage set behind the house. The owners wanted to update and expand the home, and to move the house forward to connect it to the house. Once a final design was set, then approvals were obtained from the municipal zoning board of adjustment for the variance relief necessary.
The expansion is a combination of an addition to the home, and a new full second level. The new layout has a total of four bedrooms. Three of them are on the new upper level, with one being a master bedroom suite with a bathroom and large walk-in-closet. The other two bedrooms on the upper level share a large hall bathroom.
On the lower level, the existing kitchen and bathroom were to remain, but with the kitchen being opened up more to the living areas. At the front the existing small dining room and living room were opened up to each other by removing the existing stairs between them. This area is open to the kitchen creating an open concept plan. Also in the existing part of the house, there is the fourth bedroom.
To the right side, an addition was created. This primarily consists of the new usable attached garage, and a large vaulted ceiling family room to the rear. Between the existing house and the addition, the stair to the second level and to the basement is located to be convenient, but also out of the way to allow for the open and flowing new plan layout.
