St. Andrews Greek Orthodox Church of Randolph, New Jersey outgrew their existing 10,000 square foot brick building and needed an addition. The new section of the building totals 23,000 square feet. The main feature of the addition is a high school regulation sized gymnasium that is also a flexible multi-purpose space with a raised stage and support area.
New classrooms and offices were a critical requirement for the expanding church family. This church hosts a large Greek festival every fall and a new commercial kitchen area was provided on the lower level to serve the buildings multi-purpose room and the exterior. The building structure was specially designed to allow for a projected future expansion of the existing sanctuary apse without having to disrupt the surrounding completed addition.
A special concern for the expansion was the blending of the new with the old. Instead of trying to strictly mimic the existing building, the new addition takes cues from the existing but is different enough in form to have its own character. This project also included the site plan design providing a new parking layout, lighting, landscaping, storm water management, and grading for the site expansion.
