Motion Auto Body is located on Route 46 at the old Netcong Circle. The Department of Transportation, in an effort to eliminate the old circle, is rebuilding the entire highway intersection in this area. To make the new traffic intersection work, the layout will extend into some of the property at the front of Motion Auto Body. his required that the existing building facing the circle be demolished, and the existing building to the right would be saved.

The owner decided to take this hardship and turn it around into an opportunity. The decision was made to create a new much larger facility on site to accommodate the very busy body shop. The new building has a much larger floor area and contains two stories with an internal car elevator. This allows many vehicles to be inside, greatly increasing the working capacity of the facility. The larger plan also allows for multiple lanes within the building to accommodate several independent lines of vehicles at once. There are also miscellaneous offices and a waiting area within the building.

The reconfiguration of the intersection makes this property a very visible location that can be seen from a distance especially from the west. The facades were designed to allow motorists some visibility into the building and to allow the workers inside to have much more natural light than in the previous building. The site is a very unique shape and has many constraints, but the new building area has been maximized to take advantage of all of the available space possible and to also coordinate with the site.

This project is a prime example of how an imposed hardship can be turned into an advantageous situation by understanding the possibilities and designing to create a building that functions well and also has a visual presence.
